This article reports on the introduction of bone marrow transplantation in Brazil and its evolution over the years, which arose the need to improve the nursing team in such treatment units. The objective is to identify the necessary competences of nurses to work in a bone marrow transplant unit. The bibliographical survey identified a scarceness of the topic covered regarding the necessary competences of nurses working in bone marrow transplantation, covering only general aspects of their work. In the findings, it was identified that the competences permeate the care and management activities of nurses. Therefore, it is important for these professionals the acquisition and development of technical skill, emotional control, team-work, family support and leadership. It is suggested to expand the debate between experts from different areas and scientific production about the professional and managerial competences in this scenario.
